Tonight I've been doing some tyre truing. I thought I would share a few things that I do and hopefully show how easy it is to get right, when everything's setup okay.
Firstly, a cardboard box, together with a homemade seal for the dust cover easily contains all the foam and makes everything tidy and clean.
This Ledgle led light is cheap and works great for tyre truing + its USB and powers off the same power supply as the truer, or its own battery.
This tape doubles as a white background which makes checking the radius on the edges of the tyre easier, and notes to remember diameter settings are helpful. I know how the dial for the diameter adjuster affects the cutting size, so I always set to these figures on the dial, and don't have to check the tyre size with a vernier gauge. This saves a lot of time.
This type of cutting tool really helps to get a smooth finish. I think this is a CRC version. The aim is for the surface of the tyre to look almost as smooth as when the tyre finishes a race. In doing this, the car can start and end the race, on new tyres, handling the same. This is why you can see in the video that I smooth the surface using P400 wet and dry, at the end of the process.
To keep the wheel spinning straight, This insert allows a perfect fit for Contact tyres, and allows the nut a flat face to push against, making the wheel perfectly true on the arbour. Its a part from Schumacher, part number U4828.
Similarly, the wheel insert that comes with the adapter for front wheels is very important.
The adapter is by Hudy. (the same as the type of truer) it includes the insert and is part number 102375.
An example of how I like to radius the tyre sidewalls. I did this with a Gravity RC Tyre file from MB Models, and P400 wet and dry.
